movin' right along
Saturday's writing session felt like a marathon, while Sunday's, even though the net gain was larger, felt more like a sprint.
My manuscript, at the moment, is like a book with holes punched through it at various spots, and the end chopped off. I've written the opening chapter, and a good chunk of what will be the second chapter, but I don't have the end of the second chapter yet, or the ending of that plot sequence. I have chunks of prose featuring the other characters in the book, but those scenes and parts of scenes are necessarily connected to one another. For the last third of the book, I have nothing, even though I know how the book ends; I just prefer to wait until the earlier bits are written, because otherwise there will be a lot more rewriting.
Saturday I forced myself to go in order all morning, adding on to chapter two, in sequence. In the evening, I started the section that introduces my soldier characters, and was dissatisfied, because I don't think it's gelled in my mind yet. I was shoving together ideas I'd garnered from research and exploring how that would affect my pov character and his companions. It's not in publishable condition, but the beginnings are on the page, and that always helps.
Sunday, I decided I would allow myself to write some "fun bits," i.e., scenes in which Important Events happened. That was more fun and less grunt labor. It was a nice reward for Saturday's slogging.
